Oh, the excitement a trade show can bring! Being ready to learn, explore, and get the most out of your tie weather it is a local show or you are traveling in. Having been to many trade shows and having made rookie mistakes along the way, I want to share with you how to make the most out of your time and get the biggest bang for your buck.
First: Know what shows you want to attend. There are so many out there to choose from, but narrowing down which ones benefit you the most will be so rewarding. If you want to focus on hair for example, a hair show like America’s Beauty Show in Chicago or Premiere Orlando will have education at your fingertips, newest trends, demonstrations, and products and tools for your business since it’s a cash and carry.
As I just mentioned: education. This is a biggie. Many states require CEU’s to renew their cosmetology or barber license. This is a great opportunity to get that done at the shows mentioned above or other shows with education. Visit the website of the show you want to attend, and look under the education or speakers or education tab. This will give you a list of what types of classes they offer. Most shows will have 2–3 days of education, so make a list of what you’d like to attend to get the most out of your time there. Visit AHP's discount page for a list of trade shows and discounts you can get just by being a member of Associated Hair Professionals.
If you are looking to buy tools or products, be prepared. This can mean so many different things, but the bottom line is, if you are looking to stock up, make sure you have bags, a suitcase, roller bags, or whatever will be easiest for you to haul all your goodies around the trade show floor. Many companies that exhibit at the show also give out freebies so you can try their products If you aren’t willing to invest in full-size products. So, you will need to have room for the extra goodies as well.
Be comfortable. I cannot stress this enough. Most shows are in large convention centers. You can easily walk many miles in just one day. Wear comfortable shoes; your feet will thank you at the end of the day.
Bring snacks and a water bottle. Most trade shows have concession stands and a food court, but if you aren’t looking to spend a lot on a bottle of water or a soft pretzel, bring some trail mix, granola bars, and a refillable water bottle.
Expect to spend money. Trade shows charge for registration, daily or 3-day tickets, and some classes. This can set you back anywhere from $250–$900. It just depends on what show you attend and, in some cases, where you stay. Do your research to know what day(s) you want to attend and which shows fit your needs and budget.
When in doubt, try it out. Attending a trade show can seem extremely overwhelming to some and that is OK. But know that it will be worth it in the end. This is a chance to network with people in your industry and develop professional relationships that grow your personal and professional brand. Attending a trade show is a fun process that provides you new business, creative ideas, a chance to invest in products and tools, and increased brand awareness.
